Hello Friends,
Well, we’ve just wrapped up our first month at Salvage Works and it has been a great success. We’ve had lots of customers through and lots of help getting off the ground.
The Grand opening was awesome, despite the nasty weather. The Kenton Street Fair was also well attended, and we had folks come through Salvage Works all day long. As the fair was winding down, the party here was just getting started. Kevin fired up the grill and cooked up delicious oysters and hot dogs and Loren served up tasty Hopworks beer and cheap wine to a thirsty crowd. In addition, Eric, Linnea and Brian played some mean old-time music amidst the piles of reclaimed lumber. The beauty of it is that the lumber was originally milled when old-time music was popular the first time around. Of course Rachel and Gudrun did a top-notch job of holding down the fort.
We’ve also made it through a few challenges like figuring out the cash register and the fax machine, and learning the nuances of an ornery forklift we’ve named Blitzy. (She apparently moved a lot of beer at the Blitz-Weinhardt brewery). We’re looking forward to summer, and to helping connect great reclaimed materials with the people who like to use them.
Now on to the nitty gritty: New Materials! In the last month we’ve gotten a lot of great stuff, including but not limited to:
- a nice set of 7 unique, unpainted fir 5 panel doors from the 20’s.
- 2 sets of unpainted fir interior french doors, 1 set vintage the other modern, well made with tempered glass.
- divided light double hung canopy and casement windows.
- a vintage built in closet, with adjustable shelving and shoe shelves!
- cedar 2×6 from 2 different decks; both batches at 600 lf, one batch is 5/4 the other is 6/4
- lots of pressure treated 2×6, 2×6 4×6 and 4×8
- a small lot of fir flooring, never painted or sanded. great for floor patches
- lumber of all sorts; standard, rough cut and cvg
- all kinds of new knick-knacks, doo-dads and what-nots
Well, that’s our report for the month of May. Hope to see you all in the store sometime soon!
